Phil Byrnes from Regency
Mr. Byrnes graciously agreed to come speak to us about Artificial Intelligence in terms we can all understand.
BS Degrees in Computer Systems and Accounting from Bentley University, Waltham, MA
MBA from New Hampshire University, Manchester, NH
I wrote my first computer program in 1972 and have worked with computer technology ever since. Throughout most of my career, I served as Chief Information Technology Officer for the companies that employed me. While I wasn’t a developer of new technologies, my role was highly pragmatic—focused on researching emerging tools and evaluating whether they posed a threat or offered an opportunity. Technologies that improved efficiency or gave our company a competitive edge were opportunities; those that did the same for competitors were threats.
This mindset meant I was constantly implementing new systems. Considering that when I began my career there was no internet, no personal computers, no mobile phones, and no email, the volume of change I helped usher in was substantial.
My final role before retiring in 2020 was Director of Business Intelligence for an electrical distributor with over $3 billion in annual sales. One of the last technologies I explored was AI-driven predictive analytics—one of the most powerful and quietly influential tools in the AI landscape. While companies like Google and Facebook use it to shape user behavior, we applied it to forecast the maximum price a customer would accept.
Though retired, I continue to do contract database programming and have embraced tools like ChatGPT to enhance my efficiency and stay current with evolving technology.
