The Regency Women’s Club’s very successful eighteenth year came to a close at the June 6th luncheon. Cindy Ware gave the thought for the day recognizing the significance of this day 80 years ago on D-Day. She reminded us how fortunate we all are to live in Regency.
Liz Coughlin presented Dodi Myers scholarships to two Battlefield High School graduates: Hailey Perri and James Carmichael who each expressed their gratitude. Two NVCC Nursing program students: Dilnoza Djaborova and Elizabeth Godfrey were not able to join us. Each recipient received $2000. These students have bright futures ahead, and we are grateful to our members for supporting this important part of the RWC. In case you didn’t know the Dodi Myers Scholarship fund is funded exclusively from the monthly luncheon raffles.
We installed our newly elected Regency Women’s Club Officers for the 2024-2025 season: President: Liz Anderson; Executive VP: Carol Bowen; VP of Programs: Nancy Converse; VP of Community Service: Joan Hughes; VP Fundraising: Elaine Hughes; Treasurer: Ethel Muter; Recording Secretaries: Hattie Thurman and Anne Pederson; Corresponding Secretary: Jane Brown.
This season’s charities, Willing Warriors and Crossroads Connection, each received $10,000 thanks to the Regency Community’s generous support of our fundraisers: The Wild West Jamboree, The Sweet Shoppe, and the Charity Golf Tournament.
~~~~ Congratulations to our raffle winners: Glenna Toppen, June Bradley, and Alida Woods! We couldn't do it without Donna Maynard's beautiful baskets, Flower Gallery's arrangements, and Mary Ginty's jams and jellies! Your ticket purchases support The Dodi Myers Scholarship Fund.
May 2, 2024 Luncheon It was a beautiful day to gather and celebrate May and Mothers! In keeping with the theme, Kathy Zuniga gave the Thought for the Day: "Everyone has a connection to motherhood, whether they are mother’s themselves, aunties, stepmothers, bonus, moms, foster moms, mentors, or daughters. All women are mothers to someone through their kindness."
As Erma Bombeck once wrote: When mothers talk about the depression of the empty nest, they’re not mourning the passing of all those wet towels on the floor, or the music that numbs your teeth, or even the bottle of capless shampoo dribbling down the shower drain. They’re upset because they’ve gone from supervisor of a child’s life to a spectator. It’s like being the vice president of the United States.”
Lunch was followed by our business meeting where Elaine Hughes, Chair of the Nominating Committee, conducted the election of officers for the 2024-2025 season. The following slate was passed by acclamation: President: Liz Anderson Executive Vice President: Carol Bowen VP Community Service: Joan Hughes VP Programs: Nancy Converse VP Fundraising: Elaine Hughes Treasurer: Ethel Muter Recording Secretaries: Hattie Thurman and Anne Pederson Corresponding Secretary: Jane Brown ~~~~ We bid a bittersweet farewell to our Program Committee VP, Barbara O'Connor, who brought exceptional programs this year. We will miss her and wish her well! ~~~~~~ The Fundraising Committee reported on the success of the Charity Golf Tournament conducted on April 25th. We collected $13,350.10 for our charities! ~~~~~~ Our very own Sue Reitzig lead us in an activity in keeping with our Mother's Day theme. She read the Wikipedia definition of a mother, and then mentioned some characteristics of a good mother. Each table was to come up with a list of those who have the same characteristics but aren't mothers. Each table read their list aloud. It was interesting to see the variety of responses, many the same, but some different. Mother Teresa topped many lists. ~~~~~~~~ Congratulations to our raffle winners: Patti Sommers, Peggy Grady, Kenna Cuomo, Sharon Goodson, and Hattie Thurman! We couldn't do it without Donna Maynard's beautiful baskets, Flower Gallery's arrangements, and Mary Ginty's jams and jellies! Your ticket purchases support The Dodi Myers Scholarship Fund.
Her thoughts included writings from Kavita Ramdas, globally recognized advocate for gender equality and justice: "We need women who are so strong they can be gentle, so education tey can be humble, so fierce they can be compassionate, so passionate they can be rational, and so disciplined they can be free."
And from Elaine Welteroth, an American journalist, editor, author and television host: "Friends, sisters, mothers, professors. When women affirm women, it unlocks our power. It gives us permission to shine brighter."
February 1, 2024 RWC Luncheon
Our February luncheon was filled with hues of red and pink as members and guests arrived to enjoy food, fellowship, and remarkable speakers.
Carol Hobday gave the Thought for the Day sharing a quote fromCharles Macomb Flandrau , an American author and essayist who lived from 1871-1937, and her own experiences using that inspiration" “The greatest gift . . . is the realization that life does not consist either of wallowing in the past or of peering anxiously at the future... It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now-this day-this hour.” From Carol: "This quote really spoke to me. When I turned 50, I went on a week-long women’s canoe trip on the Allagash River in Maine. After riding all day in a rattly van pulling our canoes, the ten of us arrived at the boat launch about 10pm. Under a gorgeous full moon, we paddled on perfectly still water to our campsite an hour down the river. Perfect! But when we woke up in the morning, we faced a strong headwind. We paddled all day and barely made any distance past our campsite. And the next day was just as windy! As all of us sat dejectedly on the shore waiting for the wind to stop, our leader reminded us that that THIS IS THE TRIP! What we have today, right now, THIS IS THE TRIP. Changing our focus to NOW changed everything. This trip was one of the high points of my life, and when I returned, I posted this sign on my mirror to remind me every day of the less0n I learned. I encourage you to join me in embracing life right now – THIS is the trip! Make it great!"
We moved on to the much anticipated program. Liz Coughlin set the stage taking us back to 1974 during the Cold War. Gini related her experiences in Moscow where she lived with her husband and sons as they found their way in the world of a covert life. Gini spoke about their training, planning, and living in an apartment that was bugged, all the while protecting her husband's and the Agent's covers. Sadly, a drop went bad and they became PNG (persona non grata) and were made to leave Moscow. Her talk was intriguing, thrilling, funny, and educational. Please see the slides in the photos that follow.
The December luncheon is always a favorite, and this year's did not disappoint! Members and guests arrived in holiday finery and spirit. Carol Bowen presented the Thought for the Day on behalf of Elena Daly. It is a quote from Anthony Hopkins that resonates with all of us: "None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an afterthought. Eat the delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you’re carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. There’s no time for anything else."— Anthony Hopkins, actor
RWC November 2, 2023, Luncheon Honoring Lady Vets
The November luncheon welcomed Bethanie Pitsky, Founder of Lady Vets. And we honored six of Regency's Lady Vets: Barbara Gilchrist, Sheila Sax, Mary Hawkins, Gerri Sibbet, Debbie Stacy, and Fran Betzner. We also recognized Debby Moore's civilian service in Vietnam with the Special Services Program.
The Thought for the Day was composed from the thoughts of Carol Wilder, a resident of Regency, the words of Artificial Intelligence, and read by Mary Howell. Example: “Thursday Happy Hour, A time to Unwind, Laughter Echoes leaving worries behind. As we toast to life our spirits high, In the circle of trust, we touch the sky.”
Krista Todd introduced our speaker, Bethanie Pitsky. Bethanie, a Navy Veteran, acknowledged all the other women veterans in the room and thanked them for their service. Bethanie shared her personal story about how Lady Vets came to be. Lady Vets is for and about women veterans who are too often invisible. Bethany talked about how her service in the Navy changed her life by giving her structure and stability. After her honorable discharge from the Navy, she noticed a theme that women were not acknowledged as serving in the military, and people assume they were wearing their husband’s military shirt and telling them to thank him for his service. It was only 75 years ago that women were allowed to enlist in the military, and women were not granted veteran status until 43 years ago. The reality is that there are 22-year-old women disabled veterans. “It is time to show women the respect that they deserve for volunteering to stand up and serve their country.” These ideas are the reason Lady Vets was formed. The Lady Vets mission is to amplify the voice and visibility of women veterans. Their clothing line looks for clean classic looks that speak to the strength that women bring to the military. Women are encouraged to share something of their veteran identity. They are interviewed and articles written to show their service which appear on the Lady Vets’ website. They believe it is important to give women veterans more recognition because they are more likely to have PTSD, as well as Military Sexual Trauma (1 in 100 for men and 1 in 4 for women) and need help in these areas. It is important for all of us to be a part of changing the narrative of what a veteran looks like and be inclusive of all the millions of women veterans.
Our Committee VPs gave reports about past and future programs and projects. ~~~ The Toy Drive is scheduled for November 24 - December 3, 2023. A list of suggested gifts was provided and will be made available online shortly.
~~~The Sweet Shoppe will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2023. Details coming soon.
